Meet Rainer Schaller – Creator and CEO of the RSG Group LLC

Rainer Schaller is the owner and CEO of the RSG Group LLC, the world’s innovation leader in the fields of fitness and lifestyle with more than two million clients. Within the past 20 years, Rainer Schaller has succeeded in turning the formerly known as “open-to-all gym” into an internationally operating business with over than 5,000 employees at roughly 300 locations in 48
countries.

In contrast to the wellness trends that predominated during the time, he initiated the discount principle within the fitness business, establishing it with substantial success. Rainer Schaller has continuously developed his company and built up more than ten brands covering “360 degrees around the consumer .”

“Now also in Würzburg” – this marketing act using a banana as the mascot was how Rainer Schaller opened his very first McFIT gym in 1997. This was followed by the opening of the corporate headquarters in Schlüsselfeld, Franconia, shortly afterward.

After just nine years, the McFIT gym chains boasted the most clients in Germany with 416,000 in 2006. In 2007, McFIT opened its Creative Office in Berlin. In precisely the same year, McFIT took over its most important competitor, Fit24. In 2011, McFIT welcomed its one-millionth member and also became Europe’s number one gym chain.

In his own training, Schaller always places great focus on high-quality sports nutrition, and it was this that inspired Schaller to set up Qi² Sports Nutrition in 2013. A year prior to that, he had started the company’s member magazine “Einfach gut aussehen” (“Simply looking good”), which reached more than a million members. Nowadays, the magazine appears in digital format under the name LOOX, and in the form of an app that provides over 300 perfect plans to suit any training targets and any training levels.
The magazine’s massive success prompted Rainer Schaller to further use the potential of the community, and in 2014, McFIT MODELS was launched as the most significant sports model agency in Europe, under the slogan “Jeder kann es schaffen” (“Anyone can do it”).

HIGH5, a new fitness concept in the American vintage and college design, with a focus on functional training, was launched in 2015.

CYBEROBICS, the new dimension virtual course training with the greatest trainers in the United States at spectacular initial locations, was created in 2016.

1Up FITNESS, the company that played an important role in the expansion to the North American market, was founded the same year. (Lately, the 1UP FITNESS changed its name RSG North America).

In the same year, JOHN REED, the world’s first Fitness Music Clubs that combine a unique combination of music, design, and fitness, was opened. The exceptional JOHN REED style, which combines elements from various cultures, periods in history, and also the street art of urban metropolises, is based on the impressions Rainer Schaller gained during his journeys. All these add up to that remarkable JOHN REED feeling.

In 2017, the international TIGERPOOL management agency was set up. The agency supports selected designers and artists from the areas of fashion, lifestyles, and art, like the fashion label Marcell von Berlin and street artist Ron Miller. The JOHN REED Family continues to grow: the first JOHN REED Women’s Club was opened in 2017 in Berlin and amazed the clientele with an enormous variety of training courses in Scandinavian modern design.

Back in 2018, THE REED, the new JOHN REED Family clubhouse, opened its doors on Alexanderplatz in Berlin. The combination of restaurant, deli, bar, and club in an urban design provides a majestic community space. THE REED is quite a special place for interaction, where fresh ideas are developed and imagination is encouraged.

Vito Scavo took over the core operating business from Rainer Schaller in the same year and became an equal partner of McFIT in Italy. McFIT GLOBAL GROUP became RSG Group in 2019. Together with its strong brands and advanced concepts, the RSG Group is still
a critical part of the busy daily lifestyles of its clients. Its ideas and thoughts and their realization always set new benchmarks.

At the Berlinale in 2019, Rainer Schaller presented his new brand, Steven Baker, that offers cake creations with a focus on “guilt-free pleasure.” With JOHN & JANE’s, he’s introducing Germany to a global sport and lifestyle trend: boutique fitness. Together with SOULBASE (yoga, Pilates, and barre) and POWERBASE (Bootcamp, boxing), the premium line combines two separate workout and studio concepts in one brand.
